Just a note of clarification to "Reality Check", and anyone else who questioned my visit to Surfside recently. I commented that I felt I was safe to travel to Surfside, should I choose, as I have been isolating for weeks.
The records tell us that a man in Seattle tested positive for Corona virus on Jan 21st. He had been to China. This case remained the only known case until Feb 29th, when the first infection was recorded at the care facility that would be the source of the infections initially.
I live in Lacey about 60 miles south of the epicenter for the virus. There were no recorded cases in Thurston County until week before last, there being thirty something currently. Mar. 9th I drove to Surfside. Our 4Plex unit is surrounded by cedar fence, so private. I had no direct contact with anyone while in Surfside, though I went to a couple of stores while there for 12 days. Everyone was being mindful of distances and contact, there being no known cases of the virus in Pacific County. (There is currently only one case known in Pac. Co.)
I returned to Lacey on the 21st, the stay-at-home order coming a day later. Since returning, I have gone to a couple of grocery stores and the gas station. Again, everyone is maintaining distance, Fred Meyers even having blue tape marking 6 feet back from the check stand.
Considering that testing is now going on for hundreds daily now, the fact that Thurston Co. has only thirty some cases known, suggests that the precautions being taken are being effective. (The expectation was, that once testing began, many positives would be recorded in people only mildly ill.)Since there is little reason to have any contact with anyone, should I choose to come down to Surfside, I have no concerns that I can be a carrier, but will continue to isolate, and avoid direct contact with anyone.
While this is a very contagious disease, there are predictable ways in which it is transmitted. Avoiding face-to-face exchanges, maintaining distances, and staying home if not feeling well, are critical. Washing hands and cleaning suspect surfaces are critical. Avoiding trips out of the home is important, but some stores are open for specific reasons.
I feel so fortunate to be retired, as the situation is very scary for most folks, financially speaking. Our retirement investments are of course suffering, but that will probably take care of itself if the country can get a lid on the pandemic. The Feds continue to fail in setting consistent closures and precautions nationwide. That is a serious problem. Not me, "Reality Check". We all wish the best outcomes for one another, and hopefully will work together where possible, in cooperation.
I see that my statement that there has been ONE case verified in Pacific County is not accurate. I've been following lots of news on this stuff and the numbers are staggering. Thurston county (Tumwater/Olympia/Lacey, etc.) still has only 33, so holding the line. Grays Harbor Co. was also still at zero known cases.
