As Stupid Does...
I usually do my grocery shopping on Fridays, but because of the long weekend holiday, I did my shopping this Wed..
Jacks was very busy with most of the shoppers not wearing masks. They were in groups with children. A pretty good indication that they were not locals. While Okies was not as busy, I found the same situation there. When I did my shopping last week, everyone was wearing masks and a single person shopping. (meat prices as well as other items were much higher. than normal. Lean hamburger at Jacks was 7.29 a lb. Okies had a limit of one roast per family.)
Surfside is filling up with RV's. I don't know what is happening on the rest of the Peninsula. I expect there will be garage sales. No thanks to any of this. I am staying right here at home until the holiday is over.
Personally, I would have liked to see all the stores, including take out, closed Friday thru Monday. Sometimes, people just forget common sense. If they want to infect each other, that is their choice, but I resent them bringing the virus to the rest of us who are trying to follow a safe practice. They are acting crazy about opening up everything.

I agree. But let's be honest, are you really that surprised? Unfortunately I'm not. Given the attitudes out there and even some that have been expressed here I knew this was going to happen. I wish people would have proved me wrong.
How simple is it to wear a mask, seriously?
I wouldn't assume all are from out of town.
When I was visiting Jack's about 3 weeks ago ago I was the only one wearing a mask. Nobody else in the store (I'm assuming at least some were local) or the employees were wearing masks.

I wear a mask and have been to both stores. I have see mostly locals at each store. One interesting observation, I did notice is that less shoppers wore a mask at Jacks than did at Sentry?
I haven't notice the influx of tourist, but I welcome them to our community, we need the $$ they bring us.
I'm staying at our place in Surfside this week. Our lawn of over 5000 sq. ft. desperately needed to be sprayed for weeds, and some other routine maintenance needed to be done. There's no need for me to have contact with anyone while down here.
I always wear a mask when I need to go out in Lacey/Oly area, as about 3/4 of the public tend to do. I've been to both grocery's twice, and am quick about it. But we have been very cautious at home since mid March, rarely going out for any reason, but to buy essentials. We are doing a lot of daycare for our 3 yr. old grand-daughter, and her parents are working out of their home.
Thurston County has done well in keeping the virus in-check, with only about 115 known cases since this all began. Our County will begin a second stage in the State opening very soon. I'm not sure it is wise, but many think Insley has been too cautious. It is a tough call. But Summer will bring more out-of-state traffic, and all of our efforts may prove futile.
I've been surprised how many people AREN'T wearing masks. The point in wearing a mask is, you assure others that they will not be infected by you, if you are unknowingly carrying the virus. I don't see an increase of people/tourists myself, though we can never know for certain. Another reason for a mask. My assumption is, that virtually ALL of the unmasked folks are locals.
I think we all have a wish that this pandemic stuff is all just a bad dream, or it's a big city problem. Some may be indignant that "outsiders" are the threat, and they have rights that "trump" the threat. The Country will hit 100,000 DEAD by the end of June, 4 months since this began. It's not a Democratic hoax folks. The U.S. has the runaway record in failure to contain the disease, and there's no indication that will change for the better.
But on the mask thing, I was surprised that the people working the floor and hardware at Jacks weren't wearing masks. Okies has become quite thorough in their precautions.
George There is a story in TheColumbian from Dan Hammock from The Daily World about Pacific Co. opening up. Including clam digs. This will really bring people down to the coast.
We only go out once a week for groceries and medications, so we want to go where we feel safe. We stopped by the Frontier market, and there was a steady stream of folks going in there without masks. We won't go there again. Okies staff wore masks and they had someone sanitizing the baskets, but the customers had no clear direction. I didn't feel very safe. So we are going to Safeway in Astoria. We feel like they have the drill under control. I would like to be a loyal Peninsula customer, but it is not worth dying for.
This holiday seems to be bringing people out with what I think is a very generalized sense that we're back to normal all of a sudden. Understandably, people have cabin-fever, who doesn't ? But many have a zombie-like glaze in their eyes, vacant of any memory of why we had to isolate in the first place.
We wish circumstances were different, but there IS NO EASY BUTTON !! Infections are at a steady rise nation-wide, and Washington is one of the few that isn't raging with new cases and piles of dead Americans. Our opening is not a problem so much as entering into a "tourist season" when MOST states are still out of control in spread and lack of testing. This is nuts, if not carefully orchestrated in Washington.
Indications are that within about 2 weeks, our nation-wide increase will explode. I hope for us all that it doesn't, but this is not a joke, or a bad dream. I want to be able to frequent my favorite restaurants, and want to see peninsula businesses return & help us all have some semblance of a Long Beach Summer season. We may luck out. But nationwide the picture is grim.
Realize that Kerry and I have been gone for almost four years but where is the Frontier Market? Is it new to the north end of the peninsula?
Frontier Market is that Chevron station at Frontier and Pacific. There is a convenience store there. You can get Propane. It's a busy intersection there.
