Surfside Lease Of State Land

Additional expense due to well field mess...

Surfside Board approved a yearly lease payment to the State of Washington (golf course area) in the amount of 5,000 dollars a year for a storage place for gravel which is now stored in the wet lands of the well field.

New area is 5,000 square feet behind the 2nd maintenance building at the gold course.

It was previously stored on the West side of the old warehouse located on approximately G Street and 116th.  It was moved from there to it's present location.  Surfside is required to remove it from the wet lands. (the same location as the new carbon treatment plant)

Why not put it back where it was by the old water warehouse?  Wet land?

Picture below is of the present location.  Click on the picture to enlarge.

The entire peninsula has a large percentage of wetlands to buildable land, the spit was mostly Wetlands when the massive re-landscaping took place, reclaiming buildable land and creating canals instead of marshland.

You have to wonder how the permitting failed to be properly handled, and why building proceeded without proper permits. The Waterworks has been at its' current location for decades, on the edge of a marshy area. Wells and storage columns, the pumphouses, the large equipment storage building built 2 years ago, all are located there. There seems no rational reason why the necessary expansion in the area to accommodate the CTP and holding pond should not be acceptable, except that the HOA was disrespectful of the process.

I take preservation of natural areas very seriously, but find it unacceptable for Surfside to be denied use of this land as needed to support this community of over 2000 member properties. Suggesting the Plant be moved is ridiculous.

Maybe the HOA can't manage to approach the regulators humbly enough to get their cooperation. I doubt enough effort has been put into this, and leasing land is a waste of money. Surfside has plenty of property where gravel can be stored. The BOT can't seem to stop spending money foolishly.

It is easy to see why surfside is the laughing stock of the peninsula, but it is no joke to those of us who are living here. Time to get rid of this joke called a HOA.
