Fish & Waterways Committee

An Important Asset  In Danger...Red Flags Raised..

Fish & Waterway Committee Minutes 5/28/2021. Special thank you to Steve Flickinger for providing these minutes.  These minutes are a perfect example of how detailed information should be presented by a committee or a Board.  You will find the contained information both interesting and alarming.  It is a 5 page read, but well worth the time.

Sorry for the delay in posting these minutes, but with all the urgent election issues, posting has been delayed. I hope this does not lesson the importance of the message contained in these excellent minutes. Our waterways and the lands surrounding them are vital for the health and enjoyment of our community. The members, committees and Board, working together, can solve these issues. Only together.

So did the committee end up planting fish in the Lake??

I watched a terrified bat, flying around in the middle of the day, looking for shelter because trees are being decimated on a daily basis. I am chewed alive this year, by mosquitoes in volume and have yet to see a bat at dusk as in years past. The tree destruction is a travesty to this environment. Stop this ridiculous slaughter, our wildlife and ecosystem is dwindling. We don't need fish stocked for humans, we don't need these chemicals in the streams and lakes, and no one, absolutely no one, on the ridge or along the lake is entitled to ruin our ecosystem for their personal gratification. I am sick of it!

Peggy Olds violated the CARL statue when she had the trees cut to the ground at the edge of Seabreeze Lake. Yet she remains Chairperson of the Tree Committee. Why has she not been removed? Those trees provided shade to cool the water and a wind break for nearby homes. The County is aware of this violation. Do we anticipate more County fines and possibly State?

Neither Peggy olds or Pam Harris will be chairs or co chairs in a few months.

So let me get this straight in my mind and help me if I’m wrong, please!

The State says our waters are not safe and can cause serious health issues, no swimming, no fishing, keep pets out of the water.
The County says sorry you are on your own with your waters, because they understand they are just retention ponds not freshwater.
CARL pertains to freshwater streams, rivers and lakes, so how is that going to help Surfside. Please refer to prior statement. (County)
The 2 Board members still want to stock the lakes and canals with fish for the derby. (Retention Ponds & State recommendation)
Are you all willing to waste the money and sacrifice people’s health just to put on a fishing derby that was canceled last year?
And lastly just because “oh great one” Williams said so, how the HELL do you know how many people read the Weekender????????

I don't see a need to find excuses for not abiding by the Carl standards. We can assume that water polution is widespread in most bodies of water, and the proximity of our Surfside waters to homes should justify extra measures to try and make them cleaner.

I agree that the Fishing Derby should be canceled, though think it's a shame. The participants will be exposed to the dangerous algae, and it's too difficult to monitor proper care taken by the kids.

So the Department of Ecology recommends not stocking fish and the committee says stock fish.

Even though the actual toxin levels were low, the cell counts were very high. This probably isn't going away any time soon. No telling if the algae will increase its toxicity, but why gamble?

And why put the poor fish in a lake full of blue green algae? It's nuts.

Why is it that the HOA gets away with cutting trees and brush around Seabreeze Lake in violation of the Pacific County Shoreline Act and paYS NO PENELTY for the destruction they caused. Another example of people on the tree commmetie ignoring or not understanding the rules. Pathetic.

This is directly taken from annette.
I would rather spend our money asking our NEW lawyer our liability.  Can we just post signs.  Will that be enough to alleviate our responsibility if someone’s dog dies or child gets swimmerAnnette.
I am so glad we have a past trustee thinking of our lawyers pockets! The disregard she has for people's dogs and kids. Oh that's right, she is on J, it's all about the view.
