WOW! How Nice

Former Surfside member makes an offer...

It is heartwarming, but at the same time, embarrassing, That a former member from across the Country would  feel the need to make a donation for something they or anyone else should have too.
There has been no flags at Veterans Park for months.

Larry is a former Board member who supported the creation and building of the park. He and his wife spent many hours helping to raise donations for a garage sale to fund the landscaping. They never missed a memorial Day event at the park. They maintained a beautiful home at 357th and G Street.
Thank you Larry and Kerry for your offer.  I hope it will not be needed.  This may bring enough attention, that both flags there will proudly be displayed once again.

George - Kerry and I just got our Stimulus check in the mail today. As proud veteran's and former residents and proponents of the Veteran's Park we would be honored to purchase a flag in remembrance of our 15 years in Surfside. Seriously if the HOA can't fund the fifty bucks to keep the flag pristine then we will do it.

I was wondering why the flag hasn't been up, yet. I just assumed it was because of the virus; like everything else. Our house is right across the street and we love seeing the flag. We keep ours out also. If we had known there was no flag, we would have gladly supplied one.

I applaud Larry and Kerry for their generous flag donations. Several years ago I also noted the lack of posting and/or the disgraceful condition of the flags. I purchased 2 American flags and a POW/MIA flag for the HOA to fly in accordance with established protocol. That has not happened. The flags were of extremely durable quality and I would imagine they are still in excellent shape, although I did see them displayed in conditions that should have dictated they be furled. At that time, I posted an entry to this blog, under my own name stating I would not purchase another flag set for the HOA. As a 27 year veteran, I took offense at the treatment that was shown to our flag.. Larry, I hope it works out better for your generosity.

Do not know Larry, but in my opinion, he’s a guy with some integrity. May some of this rub off on HOA board members. Come on people: do the right thing and replace the flag at Park. Shameful

A member, who at the time, lived in Southern California, contacted me about making a donation of a park bench for the park. Today it is located at the waters edge with an inscription to our veterans. He asked to be anonymous. I have honored that request. He also donated the small sign that says "Deer Lake" Small things can have special meanings for our members. I continue to request improvements to the park that honors our veterans. That is the least that we can do for all they have done and continue to do for us.

I'll work with my American Legion Post to donate flags. Too bad we dont have any Veterans on the Board, it would have been a non-issue if we did. Guess they're too busy spending money on tree and lighting lasers.

Not signaling him out to criticize but Kirby Smith is former Army and an officer to boot. Tipped a few ice cold Rainier's talking with him about his stint in Korea.

Hang on Brenda. I offered to purchase flags (from afar) but someone else beat me to it. Don't heap any praise on me for this. I'm glad someone, I assume local, beat me to it. Great !!

My wife Kerry and I also collected flags (had a box in the office) for the flag burning ceremony ( Flag Day / June 14th )held at the Elks in Long Beach. The proper disposal of a flag is an important part of flag ownership. Please don't ever throw a flag in the trash, They had someone give a short recital of how our flag came to be. Really great when young people were brought by their parents and/or grand-parents. I'm guessing it won't happen this year but something to remember when things return to normal. We have a lot of veteran's in our and other hoa's in Green Valley, AZ and many have a flag flying 24/7. We also have a neighbor who plays taps at dusk.
