It is not political when a good person has left us. He has set a good example of integrity and honesty in his private life and political life. It reminds me that his principals are missing in some Board members as well as others. The leaders in our organization need to set examples like John Mccain has shown.

I heard a Seattle politician trash McCain for his support of a strong military and defense, and blamed him personally for the deaths of American servicemen in recent wars and conflicts. This was on the day he had passed away.
I found this offensive, though I'm not a big war machine supporter, feeling that much more can be achieved through negotiations. The need for a strong defense is obvious, and our role in the world, complex. McCain's viewpoint has to be looked at in the light of the period in which he lived, serving in a military conflict and held hostage for 4 1/2 years, coming from a military family.
I disagreed with his views on some issues, but overall found him to be principled and honest, and respectful of his fellow politicians. He understood the need to keep the lines of communication open between parties, as well as countries. I watched Saturday Night Live last night, with John McCain as host in 2002. Interesting that he was embraced by these folks, in spite of his conservative views on most subjects.
Some of his colleagues pointed to his stubborn dedication to principles, but willingness to admit to his mistakes of judgement at times, and mend fences, valuing friendships above politics.
