Comfortable Retirement?
Comment by an "Elitest" (Elitist) Needs a reply. The bad face of Surfside..

How about giving this new GM a chance before making judgements? The information that is online would make it a reasonable guess that he is one of those folks who didn't prepare for retirement so is forced to work to survive.

8:15, failed to prepare for retirement? Alot of times its out of ones control. Dont be such an elitest.

It is not elitist to save and sacrifice for a secure retirement. Many of us prepare with insurance and savings to meet the catastrophes that could derail comfortable retirement.

It's not a "Bad Face of Surfside" it's just some ones opinion of how things work. There's a lot of truth in what this poster says. Many people don't really plan for retirement like they should. Sure, bad or unexpected things happen to the ones that do plan that can vastly change their retirement outlook, but for the most part, these occurrences are on the rarer side. Although, because of the low cost of property and living in this area, we probably have a disproportional higher amount of people living in the area who have suffered a unplanned for set back(s).
Creating division and distrust among members of differing socio-economic means does not benefit the association or its members. Deal with it, there is nothing elitist about Surfside. A few who want to change things to benefit themselves have done no favors for Surfside in their work to create this bias and propaganda in order to achieve their selfish goals. Why not give the new GM some time before making judgements?
The fact is, the man has been hired, so we are obliged to wish him the best, and hope he can fill a need for effective management. Since the community is in a complicated mess of its' own creation, there is good reason for having reservations and doubts.
I don't see that there is any reason to judge him on his desire to work, or make any assumptions of his financial status. There are many ways in which long term financial planning can go awry, even for a very good financial planner. Investments can fail, embezzlement can occur by trusted individuals, healthcare expenses can be extreme, health issues can lead to lost jobs and benefits,...lets be realistic here.
The details are his business, and he IS the new manager. He has earned an opportunity to do what he can for our HOA Business Office and Water Dept., and better to be optimistic, and see how it goes. It's premature to think otherwise.
With all of the various critical comments aimed at this man before he even starts, why did this particular exchange warrant its own separate topic?
The topic is not about the new General Manager, It is about a smug attitude that if you have to work beyond retirement or on a limited income, it's your fault because you did not plan. There is a factor of good and bad luck. It is the attitude that some have, that they are smarter and better than others. That attitude is what makes Surfside look bad. I think the comment by Steve, sums it up pretty well.
To whom do you refer? Looks like most of the selfish goals have been accomplished by the special interests Board.
Leadership comes from the top. I wish the new general manager the best, but do not expect it, because the board will not stay out of his way.
George, you see smugness. Most of the rest of us see realistic and practicality. Quit embarrassing yourself. This pushing of an idea of elitism in Surfside is just plain hateful.
Elitism is hateful and we see it everyday here in Surfside. It controls the Board and produces unfair and discriminatory covenants and their enforcement as well as a committee. You must have an ability to be able to speak for "Most of the rest of us", I do not have that ability. I can only speak from my own observations and a few others who speak up.
You would have to be blind to not see the elitism of j place n friends in this blog and the bot. Most are not blind, just disgusted.
This is kinda shocking. To see this cyber-bullying based on a picture of a man who appears to be the same age as a bunch of us. Wow! After living through the Vietnam era, the Women's Movement, the Sexual Revolution, Women in the job force, and paving the way for the next generation - now we have to endure ageism. You guys just cut it out!
Symptomatic of a badly led organization that either needs to change radically or disband, thereby freeing the members who do not care to be represented by special interests!
Perhaps those who scream elitism when anyone disagrees with them should rethink their inflammatory and bigoted comments.
Looking down on someone for having less materially than yourself is elitist, plain and simple. You are trying so hard to deny it, you surely are one. Not everyone values the almighty dollar more than anything in the world, and luck comes into play in the course of someone's life, retirement at about 65 years on the planet.
The point that was being made, is that no one has any insight into the details of the new manager's life, or has any basis to belittle him. He has no responsibility to explain to petty HOA members WHY he wanted to work for Surfside. Considering he has moved from Steamboat Island to Southern California where he wasn't happy, moving to Surfside probably sounded great. The job pretty much demands that the new hire move to the community.
There has been a great increase in the occurrence of severe flooding, and the frequency of massive storm clusters that produce multiples of tornadoes and hurricanes. For those who lose everything they own under circumstances beyond their control, we should assume it was poor planning for the future ?
Hardships can come in many forms, and most cannot be anticipated or planned for. To deny that life is complicated and sometimes cruel is to be Elitist.
What we know about Mr. Haber is that he wanted the job offered to him, and he is our new Bus./Water Dept. Manager. Anyone who elaborates on that is living in their own head, and not on planet Earth.
Elitism!!!
OMG, someone just screamed Elitism!
They knew the rules when they bought here. They need to shut up!
What do rules have to do with incompetence? Adding up the fines, present n future proves my point.
They may have known the rules, but they didn't know that they would not be applied to everyone equally. They probably even thought that the rules would be periodically reviewed and changes made if needed or wanted by the members. They probably thought they had a voice in the association. They probably never expected to be told to "shut up!"
They know now.
It is a good guess that the new GM needs the job. Why else take a job with an hoa that has so many, many problems when past the age of 65?
Only an elitist would buy property in an hoa with the thoughts that they would change the covenants to suit themselves.
Yes. Anyone who wants to make changes to the covenants to suit themselves must leave now. Get out of here. Move now and go away.
The only reason the BOT makes changes is to suit others. They never violate conflict of interest or practice retaliation.
What kind of garbage sre 1242, 255, and 312 (probably the same person) spewing out here?
Statements of the previous type strongly suggest a visit to a mental health organization.
Reality is that things will change with time, unlike your ridiculous comments.
Me thinks you have been trolled 7:49 ! LOL
As grown adults these people should have a sliver of understanding how the democratic process is supposed to work in organizations such as our HOA. One person does not decide to "change the rules to suit themselves", and just proceed to do so. There is a specific process outlined in our bylaws for changing the covenants, as there is in all such organizations.
What is absent in our Bylaws is a provision to require some form of vote of the members to approve such changes, as well as propose changes. This is how such a system is generally built and Surfside is lacking this important empowerment of the membership. That needs to be changed.
What has been proposed by forward thinking members is requiring a vote of the members in a member meeting to change or create new covenants, just like the other 99% of HOAs. One member does not decide to change the covenants to suit themselves, nor does that notion make any sense in the real world.
Well said 9:48 AM.
Nobody has ever said they wanted to change the rules to suit themselves.
People have attempted to engage in dialogue on this blog about rule changes.
The problem is we have petulant children adults, who are selfish bullies, who hate people that want to improve the democratic process of our hoa. We know who they are. They are people like 12:42, 2:55, and 3:12.
Thank you 9:48. One of the goals I'm hoping to see with new leadership, covenant changes to allow for SHOA members to be able to vote on said covenant changes. I think then we'll see a more active participation by membership when they are empowered to take control of their community.
I agree with 9:48
We also need a complete review of the covenants as they exist today and make needed changes in the wording and content so they are understandable and enforceable.
As an example the covenant that you shall maintain your property in a neat and attractive manner. I think most members see that as the most desired covenant of all. The interpretation of that is to vague and leaves much to individual interpretation. Unless the covenant is clear, enforcement is almost impossible.
I am hopeful that the new General Manager will convince the Board of the necessity of a review and maybe done in conjunction with a new pro-active compliant officer. Member participation is vital in acceptance and enforcement. Fair and firm are the key words.
Very possibly the same person, one who is not needed in these discussions.
So do we have anyone good running for the board? I've heard that Flood and Clancy are both running, isn't it time we had some new blood?
It's best not to say on here. People who hate others trying to bring more member participation or equitable change will ridicule, be little, slander, bully, and intimidate me.
I'm sick of it. And I don't want to hate back. Unfortunately some like to hate others.
"He Hate Me!"
You bring it to yourself, troll.
8:00 and 8:34. They are some of the elitists we're talking about.
8:34 is blaming me for him hating me. Of course, rediculously blame the victim. We see your elitist attitude.
Nice try on the role reversal, trollboy, but nobody's buying.
Time to end this. Everything but the subject matter.
